How to read an NSE option chain

Use several signals together when researching derivatives; no single option-chain metric predicts market direction.

Open interest, change and volume

Open interest shows outstanding contracts, OI change shows how that total moved during the session, and volume shows contracts traded. Compare calls and puts around the spot price to study participation and positioning.

PCR, max pain and OI walls

The put-call ratio compares whole-chain put and call open interest. Max pain estimates the strike with the lowest aggregate option payout, while the largest put and call OI levels can help describe visible support and resistance zones.

IV, Greeks and futures basis

Implied volatility reflects the volatility embedded in option prices. Delta, gamma, theta, vega and rho estimate model sensitivities. Futures basis compares a futures contract with its reported underlying price.
